Sorry, dear, but I can’t hear you right now

My ideal writing environment is a quiet, clutter-free place. However, the last time I had either quiet or tidiness in my home was probably the day before my elder son was born, nearly a decade ago. With two lively children on premises, life in general these days is loud and messy; and to be honest, I rather like it that way (except when it’s driving me crazy). Still, to get any writing done, I find it’s best to locate myself in areas of my home or schedule that at least aspire to library-like standards. If I tidy up my desk before sitting down at my computer, or vacuum the carpet before curling up on the couch with a notebook and a pen, I’m much more likely to tap into a good writing vein.

I’ve also found judicious use of ear plugs to be a writing lifesaver.
